Screening and Diagnostic Imaging Servcies

 

The Charlotte Hungerford Hospital’s offers the most advanced screening technology and detection services available today to ensure its physicians and patients have the local resources needed in their community.

 

  • Breast MRI - Used to determine what the inside of the breast looks like without having to do surgery.        
  • Breast Ultrasound - Uses sound waves to make a picture of the tissues inside the breast.
  • Breast Biopsies - Removes all or part of the abnormal tissue so it may be sent to a laboratory for examination.
  • Mammography - Uses X-rays to create images of breast tissue to detect and evaluate abnormalities.
  • Digital Mammography – Provides physicians clearer images on a computer monitor and alter their size, brightness, and color. Pre-menopausal women ages 40 to 50 and those with dense breasts are most likely to benefit.

Breast Health Navigation 

 

The Charlotte Hungerford Hospital is leading the way to quality breast cancer early detection and treatment with its Breast Health Navigation program coordinated by a certified nurse navigator located at the Hospital. The nurse navigator works with a team of specialists including surgeons, radiologists, oncologists and other hospital and cancer care staff members to ensure that women are fully supported if they need assistance related to breast cancer education and treatment.

 

The Breast Health Navigator

 

  • Guides women through the diagnosis process
  • Provides emotional support and one-on-one education
  • Identifies options and services available at CHH for patients
  • Coordinates appointments and directs patients to local resources
  • Serves as a patient advocate

Breast Surgery by skilled Surgeons

 

The Charlotte Hungerford Hospital offers the services of the board certified physicians at Surgical Associates of Litchfield County, the area’s premiere surgical group located on the Hospital campus offering the latest procedures in surgical care and the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. This includes surgical biopsy, sentinel lymph node biopsy, lymph node dissection, lumpectomy and full and partial mastectomy procedures. 

 

"Next Generation" Radiation Therapy

 

Medical Oncologists and Breast Surgeons at The Charlotte Hungerford Hospital’s Center for Cancer Care use the very latest technology and therapies in the fight against cancer delivered with sensitivity and compassion to provide comprehensive and proven cancer treatment. 

 

Therapies used at The Center include:

 

Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)

  • Delivers treatment to the whole breast
  • Decreases dose to skin and other critical structures
  • Allows dose escalation with decreased side effects

 

Partial Breast Irradiation Therapy (PBI) External Beam & Mammosite Options

  • Delivers doses of cancer fighting radiation to a targeted area of the breast
  • Drastically decreases delivery time for treatment (from 6 weeks to 5 days)
  • Decreases localized side effects

Breast Cancer Treatment and Clinical Trials

 

Specialists at the Center for Cancer Care offer patients national clinical trials designed to find the best treatment choices, new treatments and drugs in the fight against breast cancer. Its patients and physicians have participated in more than a dozen landmark breast cancer trials that test the effectiveness of drugs and treatments to prevent cancer, the recurrence of cancer, and help identify drugs and treatments to help patients whose breast cancer has spread.
