CHH Radiation Oncology Department

The Charlotte Hungerford Hospital Radiation Oncology Department offers technically sophisticated medical care in an environment that supports both patients and families. A team consisting of Radiation Oncologist Elizabeth Whalen, M.D., radiation therapists, nurse practitioner, a dosimetrist, physicist, dietician and a case manager work together to provide a friendly, personalized atmosphere for patients.

Connecticut Oncology and Hematology, LLP.

The Center For Cancer Care program utilizes the services of Connecticut Oncology and Hematology, LLP, a physician practice specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, hematological, and related diseases. The group consists of board-certified physicians in medical oncology and hematology and two nurse practitioners with concentrations in oncology and hematology.

Specialty Physician Services & Programs

The center utilizes the expertise of a wide range of specialized physicians and diagnostic and screening services associated with nearby Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, Hungerford Diagnostic Center and Hungerford Emergency and Medical Care in downtown Winsted. Patients have easy access to board certified specialists in the areas of general surgery, urology, otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat) and gastroenterology.

Cancer Services & Treatment

The most advanced cancer fighting technology is at your doorstep…Our specialty in helping you take one step at a time. The Center For Cancer Care’s Radiation Oncology physician and affiliated surgeons and specialists use the latest technology and medical advancements to provide comprehensive and proven cancer treatment delivered with sensitivity and compassion. Technology such as MammoSite Radiation Therapy have reduced patient’s radiation treatment time from six weeks to five days.

The Center’s Advanced Technology includes:

  • Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)
  • High-dose rate MammoSite breast brachytherapy
  • Brachytherapy utilizing prostate seed implants
  • 3D conformal radiation therapy
  • Chemotherapy and immunotherapy

Screening & Diagnostic Services

The Center For Cancer Care utilizes a full range of diagnostic services provided through the Hungerford Imaging Network, a group of hospital and off-campus service providers located in Torrington and Winsted. They use the most advanced screening technology and detection services to ensure physicians and patients have the necessary local resources in their community. Offerings and services include MRI, CT scans, digital mammography, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, nuclear medicine imaging, angiography, PET scans, DEXA screening and digital X-Ray.

Breast Health Navigation Services

The Charlotte Hungerford Hospital is leading the way in quality breast cancer early detection and treatment with its Breast Health Navigation program coordinated by a certified nurse navigator. This nurse guides women diagnosed with breast cancer, provides emotional support and one-on-one education, identifies available options and services, coordinates appointments and resources and serves as a patient advocate and friend.

Clinical Trials & Research

Cancer research and national clinical trials help fight cancer.  Ours are helping the people of northwest Connecticut. Debra Brandt, D.O., and specialists at Connecticut Oncology and Hematology have helped bring new drugs to patients by offering eligible patients opportunities to participate in national clinical trials. These trials are designed to find the best treatment choices and offer more options and drugs to fight against cancer. Many of the treatments have been approved and are now part of standard procedures.

Types Of Cancer Trials Available:

  • Prevention Trials: Test the effectiveness of drugs and treatments to prevent cancer
  • Adjuvant Trials: Assist in finding drugs and treatments that prevent the recurrence of cancer once a patient has been treated
  • Metastatic Trials: Help identify drugs and treatments to help patients whose cancer has spread

Cancer care is more than just technology. Ours means an extra helping hand when needed most. In addition to our proven medical treatment, The Center for Cancer Care Fund provides two very important tools – educational resources to help prevent cancer and opportunities that assist patients understand, cope and live with a diagnosis. The center provides personal and effective programs including free screenings and support groups, financial assistance and enlightenment activities that teach new ways to aid the mind, body and soul.

The Center for Cancer Care Fund, Inc.  

The Center For Cancer Care Fund, Inc., is a not-for-profit organization created to assist and support cancer patients residing or receiving care in northwest Connecticut. The fund supports cancer patients with care, treatment, education and prevention programs and awards financial assistance to patients for emergencies such as food, rent, transportation, utilities, medications or other emergent needs as determined by clinicians and case managers.

CHH Early Detection Program

The Charlotte Hungerford Hospital works in conjunction with the Connecticut Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program to ensure that medically underserved women are being educated about breast cancer and have assistance to help defer the cost of screening services. The program is also supported by the Susan G. Komen For The Cure – Connecticut Affiliate.
