Charlotte Hungerford Hospital Opens Clinic to Reduce Food Insecurity
December 13, 2023
The Food4Health Clinic at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital is now open and providing access to healthy food choices for patients who may be struggling to afford groceries and find nutritious options.
Designed like a local grocery store, the Food4Health Clinic offers fresh fruit, vegetables and other healthy items at no cost for patients who have received a prescription from a Charlotte Hungerford Hospital physician. Patients are prescribed food specific to their health concerns, such as low-sodium items for patients with high blood pressure, or certain items and recipes for patients with diabetes.
The Food4Health program opened its first location at Hartford Hospital in 2022 and expanded with a satellite location at Hartford Hospital’s Institute of Living.
“We are thrilled to expand upon the success of the Food4Health program to patients at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital,” said David Fichandler, senior director of operational coordination, integration, and excellence for CHH and Hartford Hospital. “Food security is one of the main social determinants of health and this clinic provides access to healthy food options to those most in need in our community.”
“We believe that food is medicine and providing patients with healthy food options tailored to their needs will help reduce their risk of developing serious health conditions,” said David Juros, founder and principal of DW Juros Consulting. An expert in designing food-delivery systems, Juros is directly embedded in the strategy, operations, and launch of every Food4Health Clinic across Hartford HealthCare.
The new clinic is located at 540 Litchfield St., Torrington, in the Memorial Building #3, adjacent to the Turner Coe Annex.
