In the heart of northwest Connecticut, Charlotte Hungerford Hospital (CHH) has undergone a remarkable transformation — one that has strengthened access, improved quality, and stabilized healthcare for a region that needed it most.
Since joining Hartford HealthCare, CHH has evolved from a small community hospital into a comprehensive regional network, connecting more patients to care, expertise, and innovation than ever before. Once facing limited access and declining resources, the hospital is now thriving — adding new facilities, expanding services, and earning recognition for quality and safety.
Today, patients across the region have access to an ambulatory surgery center, two urgent care sites, and a GI endoscopy center, all designed to make care faster, easier, and closer to home. The hospital also brought Hartford HealthCare’s institute model to Torrington — integrating advanced specialty care in areas such as heart and vascular, cancer, and behavioral health — along with new home care and visiting nurse programs that extend support beyond the hospital walls.
Partnerships have been key to this progress. Collaborations with Advanced Medical Imaging of Northwest Connecticut and Litchfield Hills Orthopedic Associates have brought world-class diagnostic and orthopedic services to the region, reducing the need for patients to travel far for specialized care.
The results are striking. In just a few years, Charlotte Hungerford has:
- Expanded from 6 to 36 care locations, now serving 22 communities instead of 9
- Tripled the number of primary care providers
- Significantly grown specialty care and surgical capacity
- Improved patient safety and quality ratings have improved, underscoring the hospital’s commitment to excellence
